I vividly recall the emotional psychologist who diagnosed my son with autism at the age of 3. She was distraught, tender, and very supportive of the process that we would have to go to. Unfortunately, I found myself holding back snickers at her emotions instead of tears at the diagnosis. I had prepared myself for the diagnosis before it actually took place. His father and I were fine with it, after all why worry about things that you cannot change. The next step was simply to be proactive. However, the most troubling thing about the diagnosis was the fact that we were told we could now start the grieving process for our son.

I am the current Mrs. Santa Clarita United States and the 44 year old married mother of son Noah Augustine Winkle; age 11 and diagnosed 8 years ago with moderate/severe autism and apraxia of speech. My husband Jack is not in the military, although both he and I have several family members who have served within the many branches. As a Marine Wife and mother of triplets, one with Autism, the emotional and financial challenges of raising a child with Autism are very personal for me. My husband is a Marine and recently returned from a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan. We had some challenging days while he was gone. That’s for sure! And I needed my friends and family to help me through that the long deployment. Many of our military families also move every two or three years, and establishing services at each new duty station is difficult for the family with special needs and coverage of care is often limited for individuals with autism.
